Taking laps or half laps explained by Stephen Bonnici
A basic and easy exercise to use at a track cycling session is called taking laps, such an easy exercise for the track riders to understand. Commonly used as a fitness exercise where one or more riders can take a lap on the rest of the group, splitting the group into two separate groups at half lap distance apart is a variation of the exercise.
Riders using the lap changes technique while taking the lap . (Mentioned on Team Spirit Cycling Camps or here on Articlebase.com)
How taking laps exercise is performed !
The track cycling coach will instruct all the riders to enter the track and make their way up to the blue line which is approximately half way up the velodrome banking together as one group to save on time, otherwise gathering riders will eat up to much time from the session.
Riders are instructed to ride in a single file manner at a steady pace, riders should use this as a warm up to the exercise and recovery phase during the exercise.
Once the riders are settled into formation the exercise can begin, the track cycling coach will use a whistle to indicate to the rider at the front to launch up to speed by dropping down the velodrome banking accelerating to the black data line at the bottom of the track using the shortest rout to get around and gain a lap on the rest of the group.
The track cycling coach may blow their whistle to indicate to each rider at the front of the group when to go, the track cycling coach may verbally indicate how many rider may take a lap working together as a group or as two riders.
The level of intensity of the effort will be at the track cycling coaches discretion, usually depending on how long track coach wants the exercise to last and also what the riders want out of the session.
Riders up on blue line single file
Track coach blows whistle to indicate the next rider in line to go
Rider on the front of blue line group drops down to the black line to gain their lap
Rider has gained a lap by joining the back of the group
Rider now has time to recover from their effort while in slipstream of a steadily paced group
It is important for the riders when rejoining the group is to scrub off their speed by riding up over the top of the tail end of the group, this helps them to slow the track bike down without having to back pedal to reduce speed, also from the safety point of view the track beneath the group is clear for the lead rider or riders to drop down when indicated by the track cycling coach.
I hope you find this exercise useful weather as a Track cyclist or Track cycling coach.

Slalom
Slalom
The slalom is a basic skill track cycling exercise and often used part of a velodrome track accreditation test.
The slalom cycling track exercise is performed by a group of riders riding single file formation equal distances apart approximately two bike lengths apart midway up on the velodrome track banking on the blue line.
When all riders are in position the exercise can begin by the track cycling coach sounding a whistle.
When whistle is sounded the rider at the rear end of the group will make their way forward to the front of the group weaving through all the gaps between the other riders using a slalom technique.
Helps if the rider do not loose or gain too much height while weaving through the spaces as this creates to speed and changes the angle of attack causing the exercise to look more rushed than in control.
Riders only need to ride little more than shoulder width apart when riding over or under the other riders during the slalom ,
This track cycling exercise teaches riders to maintain constant speed without closing gaps and builds confidence riding close to other track riders.
It is important for new track cyclist to learns these skills, many road cyclist that cross over to track cycling during off season track training for winter fitness or to race indoors are not used to riding a fixed gear bicycle with no brakes.
I hope you find this information useful for your track cycling session weather you coach or ride a track cycling session.

Lap changes
Track Cycling Exercise
Lap changes is one of the most common exercise you will perform at a cycling velodrome track session.
It is a basic procedure that is performed while group riding on the velodrome which enable riders to share the work or effort time spent riding on the front of the group.
Riding a bicycle at the front of a group of riders uses more energy than the riders following, each rider will tuck behind the other sheltering from the wind in the slipstream caused from each rider ahead .
Firstly, riders need to be competent at riding single file and keeping the distance to a minimum between them, this takes confidence !
Unless told by the track coach, each rider will do no more than one lap at the front of the group, (taken turns)
When entering the bend, the lead rider will ride almost straight on taking them higher up the velodrome banking and then making their way to the back of the group.
To do this, it is important not to slow down to the point of sliding off the banking and crashing into oncoming cyclist. A key element is just to ride further around the bend at the top of the velodrome banking while the rest of the group remain at the bottom of the track maintaining speed.
Safety checks while performing manoeuvres , riders should check over there shoulder in the direction they are about to turn, assure to maintain power and speed while looking as slowing down causes the following rider to over lap the wheel , over reactions have a knock on effect down the line , accidents happen at this point .
To help not to over lap the wheel in front, leave a space , this distance will depend on the level or ability of the riders in the group, for example if the riders are all elite intermediate novice or mixed ability, the riders will probably concertina back and forward causing gaps to open and close, rather than back pedal which tax the legs every time, it is best to gradually ride slightly higher than your lead rider to compensate for this, the extra wind resistance and distance on the outer side will compensate this.

Track Cycling Exercise
Lap changes in pairs
Exercise has to be performed at mid track, reason for this is the riders are riding side by side in pairs as on a road ride, the two riders on the front split apart after their turn on the front allowing the following pair to go through, this procedure works well with large groups of experienced riders during warm up as it keeps a sociable pace.
